Who's making the headlines today?!

Alicia Silverstone Actress

Alicia Silverstone, co-star of the "Beauty Shop" Movie!

Alicia Silverstone was born on October 4, 1976, in San Francisco, California as the youngest of three children to parents Monty Silverstone, a real-estate investor, and Didi Silverstone, a former flight attendant. Alicia's career began at the tender age of six when her dad, Monty, took some photos of his young daughter. The photos allowed her to get some modeling gigs which then led to television commercials. After a guest spot on The Wonder Years (1988) as a literal "dream girl" she moved on to movies. She landed a role in The Crush (1993), a sort of Fatal Attraction for teenagers in which she portrayed a disturbed young lady obsessed with an older man. The nasty little role didn't impress the critical establishment but it wowed its target audience of teenagers. In fact, the role won her the 1994 MTV Movie Award for "Best Villain" and "Breakthrough Performance." It is interesting to note that during the filming of The Crush, Alicia became an emancipated minor in order to get around child labor laws which would have interfered with her working hours. She was a dedicated actress from early on. The Crush also caught the attention of Aerosmith, who hired her to appear in a string of their music videos. The first of them, "Cryin'" was voted the number one video of all time on MTV. Silverstone was definitely a hit with the MTV crowd, but larger commercial success had still eluded her. That all changed when she landed the role of Cher in Amy Heckerling's Clueless (1995). The Cher character was the antithesis of her role in The Crush. This time around Silverstone was a naive yet endearing girl from Beverly Hills in search of love in the nineties. The film was a huge sleeper hit at the box office and wowed both audiences and critics alike. It also demonstrated Alicia's strength and bankability. She was hailed as the woman of the hour, and branded the spokeswoman for an emerging young generation. She signed a deal with Columbia Tristar worth $10 million and got the coveted role of Batgirl in the Batman franchise. Also, as part of the package, she got a three-year first-look deal for her own production company, First Kiss Productions. The first film released by First Kiss was Excess Baggage (1997) which received very muted reviews.

The Plain English Campaign awarded her the annual Foot in Mouth Award in 2000 for her 'baffling verbal statement', "I think that Clueless (1995) was very deep. I think it was deep in the way that it was very light. I think lightness has to come from a very deep place if it is true lightness".

She is an animal rights activist. During the filming of Clueless (1995), she adopted a raggedy old mutt, whom she found wandering the streets of Los Angeles. She kept it on the set.

In answer to the question 'Is it true that you like to do gardening naked?' in Britain's 'Radio Times' magazine (22.5.04) she said, 'Yes, that is something that I enjoy doing. I don't know how you know about that but it's ... not untrue. It's just that if it's really hot and you're in LA, and you happen to be doing some gardening -- your clothes come off. I also like to swim naked and trampoline naked and do all those kind of things.'

Voted sexiest female vegetarian, 2004

Her personal quotes:

"I don't feel like a dream girl, but I think it's really nice. I guess a part of me wishes I got that sort of attention in my real life. Because in my real life, I'm this weird, dorky girl who just hangs out with her dog."

"I hate people to call me 'that Aerosmith chick!'"

I think that Clueless (1995) was very deep. I think it was deep in the way that it was very light. I think lightness has to come from a very deep place if it's true lightness.

"My boyfriend calls me 'princess', but I think of myself more along the lines of 'monkey' and 'retard'".

On her 'chocolate is better than sex' quote: "I was interviewed when I was 17 and I didn't actually say that. It was the worst piece of journalism that I've ever been involved with."

"Some days I wake up and think 'what's wrong' and I'd realise it's nothing other than waking up in a not so great a mood. Generally I feel good though. I go to yoga, I feel great. I love to wake up on Sundays - just hang out with the dogs."

"My parents taught me about other cultures. I spent time in Africa, Cuba, Europe, Jamaica, the Amazon and that was nothing to do with work."

"To be put in a position at 15 where people are saying how sexy you are is really awkward, so I did all I could to try and diffuse that. It's only now that I've started to feel like I've become a lady."

"I'm not obsessed with being in the public eye. It's not my job to impress people - I'm really just a working actress and I like to pick projects and do things that really inspire me."

"The things that move me and excite me aren't necessarily going to be box-office hits all the time. My favourite film I've ever done was Love's Labour's Lost (2000) and I think - in box-office terms - barely one person saw it. But I still think it's the greatest movie and I don't care if anybody doesn't like it. I saw it in seven different countries and the audience would leave the theatre dancing. I think that's a pretty incredible thing."

"I think people that genuinely do good are great people. And I don't think, "Oh, there must be something wrong with them". I think that there's something wrong with the people who aren't doing good."
Salary
Excess Baggage (1997) $3,300,000

Alicia Silverstone Says New Film Magical

Alicia Silverstone likes the way her new film - the mystical thriller "Silence Becomes You" - makes her feel uplifted.

"This movie is beautiful, magical, romantic and really sexy. And I had an incredibly creative experience here in Lithuania," the 28-year-old actress told The Associated Press.

The British-produced film tells the story of two sisters who bring home a man on a dare, with the purpose of impregnating one of them.

Silverstone, whose screen credits include "Clueless" and "Batman & Robin," said working with director Stephanie Sinclair helped her renew her craft.

As for the time she's been in Lithuania, Silverstone said she's fallen head over heels for Vilnius. The actress said she enjoyed wandering the streets at night and was amazed by the city's history.

"I just loved the old town, it is so magical, it's perfect for our filming of such a mystical story. History was present everywhere - on the ground, in the walls and the graffiti. It's really cool," Silverstone said.

As for her character in the film, Silverstone said she can relate to Violet.

"As a person I would like to be more like Violet in some ways, and I would like Violet to be more like me. She is so present at the moment, so free and creative. I would love to be all of those things. But she is a little bit trapped and so attached to her sister. I feel bit more independent that way," she said.

Alicia Silverstone, 'I've Fallen in Love ... with Lithuania'

Alicia Silverstone likes the way her new movie, the mystical thriller "Silence Becomes You", makes her feel uplifted.
"This movie is beautiful, magical, romantic and really sexy. And I had an incredibly creative experience here in Lithuania" the 28-year-old actress said in an interview with The Associated Press at an old manor house outside the capital, Vilnius, that served as the backdrop of filming for the British-produced film.

The film, which is due out next year, marks a return of sorts for the star of "Clueless" and "Batman and Robin." It's her first film since last year's "Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed."

Silverstone said Friday that working with Stephanie Sinclair on "Silence Becomes You," which is about two sisters who, on a dare, bring a man home with the underlying plan to have him impregnate one of them, helped her renew her craft.

As for the time she's been in Lithuania on the shoot, she said she's had a stirring love affair with the Baltic state of 3.5 million.

The San Francisco native said she has fallen head over heels for the capital, Vilnius, where most of the filming has taken place in the Traku Voke Manor, which was built in 1876.

The actress enjoyed wandering on the streets of the medieval quarter at night and was amazed by the history of the city.

"I just loved the old town, it is so magical, it's perfect for our filming of such a mystical story. History was present everywhere, on the ground, in the walls and the graffiti. It's really cool," Silverstone said.

The actress was also inspired by the cold winter.

"This place is really beautiful, the snow is exiting. I love the sound when it crunches, it is so lovely," Silverstone said sitting near a gas heater in a cold bedroom with carved wooden ceilings and dark curtains on the windows.

As for her character in the film, which is slated for release later this year, Silverstone said she can relate to Violet.

"As a person I would like to be more like Violet in some ways, and I would like Violet to be more like me. She is so present at the moment, so free and creative. I would love to be all of those things. But she is a little bit trapped and so attached to her sister. I feel bit more independent that way," she said.

Alicia Silverstone: "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed"

She may not be the star of the pooch comedy, but beautiful Alicia Silverstone, who recently debut on Broadway in The Graduate, knows not to take herself too seriously, especially playing a newscaster in the sequel to the hit comedy.

Question: Did you base your character on anyone in particular?

Answer: [Laughs] No, not really. I just had fun with, you know, when you watch newscasters and they have that certain affected voice that rounds at the end. It's just so funny. I had fun playing with that. Sometimes, there will be one thing that I'll pick up in the script, or that I'll just make up and get so excited about, and then create the whole thing around it. So, for me, that was the idea that I was the mayor of the town. I just decided that my character, Heather Jasper Howe, was truly just trying to protect the citizens of Coolsville and, with all her heart, she is so devastated that Mystery Inc., who she was such a fun of, would do this to her and put her in a position where she has to report to the public. She's just so devastated. That was really fun, because it's such bullshit, to ride on that and have her really be dedicated, almost like Heather Jasper Howe enjoys being an actress. The guy underneath me has an actor in him that wants to create this character and convince the people that she wants to take care of them and that this is just so devastating. That was just so much fun to do, and that helped me figure everything out.

Question: How was it joining a sequel cast?

Answer: Well, I was lucky, in that I didn't work every day, so I got lots of time off to do other things and wander around. So, the amount of time that I was with them was so short that it just was what it was. But, they were so cool, and everybody was really great. I'd worked with Matt Lillard before on 'Love's Labour's Lost,' very different movie, so I felt some kind of excitement to get to see him and work with him again, and see where are lives had [taken us]. We've both grown up so much since that time, and things have changed so much for us, that it was neat to experience that with him. But, I didn't even get to say one [word]- - we didn't get to work with each other at all. We were just around each other. Same with Seth Green. I never interacted with a lot of the actors. We just were all in it together. But, it was a really cool cast of people and they're all really nice. I wasn't on set much, honestly. It was one of those great jobs where you don't have to work a lot and you still get to be a part of a great thing. I would just wander around Vancouver and go on dates with myself, and enjoy having dinner in a really neat, nice restaurant by myself and watch people and work on my character. I really had a great time there.

Question: Was it fun to film the cat fight scene between you and Sarah Michelle Gellar?

Answer: We had one rehearsal, for an hour or something, one day, where we played with it and kind of worked out what we would do a little bit. I'd never met her before. I remember feeling really good about it. I remember feeling mean. But, the funny part was that her and I were obsessed with the 'American Idol' thing that was going on, at the time. Every time we were together, that's what we would talk about. And so, I'd be really mean to her, and then in between takes, we'd be like, "So, anyway, what do you think about [what happened on 'American Idol']." It was also hard because I actually felt really bad [being mean to her], even though she knows that I don't mean it. She looked so sweet and adorable when she was looking up at me, and I was just shooting her venom and being so mean. I remember having a thought of, "Oh, she's so cute. She's so sweet." [Laughs] I thought, "That's good. She's good. She's making it hard."

Question: Is this the kind of movie you would have gone to see as a kid?

Answer: I don't even remember seeing movies as a kid. [Laughs] When I was a kid, I watched 'The Three Stooges' and the tape of 'The Wizard of Oz,' over and over and over again. I don't think I went to see movies that much, until I got older, like 13. Before then, I don't think I ever went to see movies. I went to see plays and theater a lot, with my parents. I don't think my parents would have taken me to this, unless I'd wanted to, I guess. But, I think, for a kid, it's a fun movie. I got really scared watching this, but kids are more used to that kind of stuff. They watch that stuff all the time, so they're probably a little less scaredy-cat than me. But, that opening title sequence was so exciting. It was neat.

Question: Do you hang out with the rest of the cast much?

Answer: I didn't, only because I wasn't there as long as they were. When I wasn't working, I think they all were. They were working and I wasn't, so I met a friend there. She was a girl who was a pilates yoga teacher, and I ended up meeting her and her children and going to Bowen Island and having fun adventures with them. I didn't spend as much time with the cast, but I would come in and out so quickly. I was sort of sporadic. But, they were all so nice and I wished we had. I know we were planning on getting together, and then I don't know what happened. I think we could never find a night when everybody wasn't working. And, I never got to see Matt's baby. I really wanted to meet his baby.

Question: What was your favorite characteristic of the character you played?

Answer: I think just the falseness in her motivation. I really liked that she was convincing the people of Coolsville that she was protecting them and, meanwhile, she was really trying to kill them and hurt them. I just thought that that was fun. [Laughs]

Question: Is 'Miss Match' coming back?

Answer: Well, I won't find out until May, when they tell all the shows what happens to them. We'll see. I just finished shooting about two weeks ago.

Question: What have you enjoyed about having a television series?

Answer: It's so exciting for so many different reasons. One of the most exciting parts is getting that script every eight days, or whatever it is. I can't wait to read it to know what's going to happen to me next. With movies, you know exactly what's going to happen to you, from beginning to end. On this, it's like, "Where am I going to go? What am I going to do? What's going to happen?" There's one episode that's coming up where Kate Fox gets really drunk and drunk dials her ex-boyfriend, and that is a really fun episode. To be reading that, it was just so exciting. Like, "Oh, my god, that's so exciting." And, I know everybody can relate to that, I'm sure. Or, at least, I know I can. So, it was just neat. It's always neat to know what you're going to do. And, I get excited about what's happening to all the other characters and where they're going and what adventures they're going to have. And then, it's just really fun because it was such a collaborative experience. I really love working with NBC. I love Jeff Zucker and I love Brian Grazer, over at Imagine. I feel like I have such a great relationship with those guys. And, all the actors were so great. And, I just loved my character. I've been having so much fun. It's just great all around.

Question: Do you have any plans if the series doesn't get picked up?

Answer: Well, I'm on my hiatus now, so I'm probably going to start a movie. I have to pick one in the next week. So, I'm going to be deciding in the next week, and then I'll probably start on a film in three or four weeks. And then, I guess, if it doesn't get picked up, I'll just do more films, or produce something, or do something -- whatever is exciting at the time.

Question: What kinds of films are you deciding between?

Answer: Well I can't tell you. All different kinds. [Laughs] All different, interesting roles. It's hard to pick, sometimes, what you're most in the mood for. I'll probably pick the one that I'm most afraid of. That's usually what I do. And, there's definitely one that gets me all scaredy-catish.

Question: Your 'Miss Match' character is always setting somebody up on a date. Can you remember your worst date? Ever been on a blind date?

Answer: I remember my worst date, but I've never been set up on a blind date. I always wanted to. I thought that would be so neat but I've heard it's not. But it sounds good, it just sounds like a fantasy.

Question: Ever made a match?

Answer: Well, I have, but it wasn't like my invention. I remember when I was doing The Crush, Jennifer Rubin whispered to me that she had a crush on one of the guys who was Cary Elwes' assistant at the time. So I ran over to Cary being a 15 year-old busybody that I was and said to the guy, "Do you like Jennifer?" And they ended up going out. So I was the cupid between them but I don't think I invented the idea.

Question: Are you going back to Broadway anytime soon?

Answer: I hope so. I really hope so, soon.

Alicia Flexes Her Hollywood Muscle

Alicia Silverstone has discovered just how powerful her Hollywood stardom is. The Clueless star is currently performing in The Graduate on New York's Broadway, and had agreed to wear an Anne Klein dress for the opening night party - until she discovered Klein also made rabbit fur jackets. After spotting the garment in a Klein catalogue, animal activist Alicia refused to wear a dress made by a company that used fur. Terrified to lose such an important customer, the fashion company pulled the jacket off the line - and they announced that they'll terminate their fur license so that it never happens again.

Alicia Loves Her Vegan Diet

Alicia Silverstone has stopped worrying about her weight because being a vegan has made it tough for her to get fat. The actress, who became an obsessive dieter after she was dubbed "really fat" in her role as Batgirl in Batman & Robin, insists she now eats whatever and whenever she wants - thanks to her vegan diet. She says, "I always used to have to worry about how I looked. I became insane about the way I looked. I freaked out and I decided screw that, I'm going to eat whatever I want whenever I want. I highly recommend doing that. I became a vegan and I knew I'd start taking care of health issues as well as personal ethical issues. Three weeks after I started the diet the weight started to fall off and I don't ever have to worry about my figure ever again. They even make vegan doughnuts and vegan cookies now."

Alicia Silverstone Goes Fake For The Animals' Sake

Alicia, 24, is a dedicated animals rights advocate who has set up a sanctuary for rescued pets in her native Los Angeles. She is promoting a website called cowsarecool.com and her outfit is made entirely of "pleather" - a synthetic alternative to animal skin. A spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) - which is behind the website - says, "Alicia's compassion makes her a vegan leader of the pack in young Hollywood, where many other hip young things such as Drew Barrymore and Joaquin Phoenix shun not only fur but all animal skins."

Clueless?

Britain's Plain English Campaign, which hands out an annual Foot in Mouth award honoring the celebrity who makes the most baffling verbal statement during the previous year, has selected Alicia Silverstone as this year's winner. As reported by the BBC, Silverstone won with this comment about her movie Clueless: "I think that Clueless was very deep. I think it was deep in the way that it was very light. I think lightness has to come from a very deep place if it's true lightness." The remark left the awards panel clueless -- or as John Lister, spokesman for the Plain English Campaign, told the BBC: "That quote left us all scratching our heads."

Alicia Silverstone Receives "Foot In Mouth" Award

Actress Alicia Silverstone has won an award for her linguistic skills - or lack of them. Alicia was singled out by The Plain English Campaign, who want to eliminate the use of confusing language, for this year's Foot in Mouth award, following an interview she gave to Britain's Sunday Telegraph newspaper. The curvy blonde actress was quoted as saying, "I think that Clueless (1995) was very deep. I think it was deep in the way that it was very light. I think lightness has to come from a very deep place if it is true lightness." The organization's spokesman John Lister says, "As a red-blooded male I'd never say anything nasty about somebody like Alicia Silverstone. It's just that this quote left us all scratching our heads."

Alicia Saves Turkeys

Hollywood actress Alicia Silverstone took her commitment to veganism a step further - by posting a plea for turkeys on the Internet! Alicia made the festive request for the birds on www.vegsource.com. She says, "Thanksgiving is such a meaningful holiday that is, unfortunately, tainted by the slaughter of thousands of helpless turkeys." The star is also publicly supporting anti-fur campaigners PETA. She is involved in a charity drive via the website: www.cowsarecool.com, where she is pictured in a faux leather jacket with sew-on patches that read, "Fake, for animals' sake."

Alicia Silverstone Doesn't "Got Milk"

Animal-activist Alicia Silverstone has taken a public stand - against milk. Alicia wrote to the Federal Trade Commission, asking the agency to investigate health claims in the dairy industry's popular 'milk moustache' ad campaign. The letter reads, "I recently stopped consuming dairy products, in part because of all the information I learned about the harmful effects of cow's milk on human health." Copies of the letter are being circulated by the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, which contends the ads are misleading because they don't mention possible side effects of drinking milk - including increased risks of obesity and heart disease.

Hooker Advertises With Alicia Silverstone's Picture

Actress Alicia Silverstone is in shock over a prostitute using her picture on her call cards around London. Alicia, who is renowned as being one of the most clean-living actresses in Hollywood, is hurt over the news her picture is being used to advertise sex around the British capital. A hooker named Cindy has plastered a picture of the blonde 23-year-old on to her sex cards which have been placed in phone-boxes around the trendy West End and Covent Garden areas. Alicia's spokesperson Elizabeth Much says, "This is a sick joke. We have no idea who this person is as we are thousands on miles away. There is nothing we can say except, we hope this goes away."

Alicia Silverstone Says Go Veggie

Vegetarian actress Alicia Silverstone wants the world to go vegetarian. The Clueless (1995) star claims she became a new person since she gave up eating meat and drinking diary products two years ago. Silverstone says, "What happened when I stopped was my skin became like, completely glowy. I lost all this weight. I started pooping right... Once you know where milk comes from you will not want to eat it. It's just creepy. No other species drinks milk from any other species. You shouldn't do it." The actress adds, "When you eat a piece of meat or a piece of chicken you are actually eating euthanization drugs... They take all the road kill - the animals that get killed in the road - and they grind them up and feed them back to cows and pigs and chickens and turkeys."

Alicia Silverstone Skips Sister's Music Debut

Alicia Silverstone stayed away from her sister's debut music gig in London - to avoid stealing the limelight. KEZI SILVERSTONE performed to a packed audience last night in London's BORDERLINE club But although family and friends had travelled from across Britain to support her, Clueless (1995) star Alicia simply sent good luck messages. The half-sisters are close after discovering each other 10 years ago. Unlike her Hollywood sister, Kezi grew up in England after her father abandoned her. And although Alicia calls her regularly, Kezi insisted last night was her night and any press would be there to see her and not her famous sibliing. Kezi says, "I want people to know who I am and not think of me as part of someone else. I'm so pleased with how everything has gone and how many people enjoyed the show. "So many of my family travelled to be here to day and I've had lots of good luck wishes and support from those who couldn't be with me."

Alicia's Not Excess Baggage At Sony

Despite the fact that Excess Baggage (1997), Alicia Silverstone's first film as a producer under a costly two-film deal with Columbia, flopped last month, the studio will probably go ahead with the second film under the deal, a studio source has told today's (Friday) New York Times. The newspaper pointed out that to do otherwise might "scare off" other top actors it might want to attract with such deals. "The studio has to seem talent-friendly, " a studio official told the newspaper, "But it is quite a price."

Will Alicia Prove She Can Produce?

Next week's opening of the Alicia Silverstone -produced Excess Baggage (1997), in which she also stars, may determine whether former Columbia/TriStar chief Mark Canton erred when he signed Silverstone to a $7-million, two-picture deal following her success in Clueless (1995), winning her away from Paramount. Reports from the Vancouver set last fall indicated that the then-19-year-old Silverstone engaged in frequent shouting matches with the director, crew, writers and other actors, with several of them walking off. Today's (Tuesday) New York Post, observing that Silverstone "took her uncredited role as producer to heart, " quotes her as saying that she wanted to "make all the decisions." But CNN movie analyst Martin Grove commented, "They made her a star, they gave her millions of dollars and she wasn't ready for it." And Jeanine Basinger head of film studies at Wesleyan University, told the Post, "I just hope that she doesn't end up being the victim of the studio's stupidity and her own inexperience."

Alicia Silverstone Gets a 'B' at Fox

Fox has given the go-ahead to "Queen B," a comedy pilot starring Alicia Silverstone, who most recently headlined NBC's short-lived "Miss Match."

Silverstone will play Bea, who always has been the Queen Bee of her world and now runs a successful company, surrounded mostly by adoring friends, but realizes she is not perceived in the same way she sees herself. The pilot was written by "Seinfeld" alumna Jennifer Crittenden.

But when they don’t, the results are hilariously disastrous; especially when Kate doesn’t recognize her own Mr. Right while pushing the right buttons for others.

Alicia Silverstone: The comedy star
